RETIRED: Mortician and wife enjoying life and dealing with death

February 19, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — He has a zest for life. Lester Sheets also has great reverence for the dead.

Lester and Doris Sheets are retired and living in Columbia City. The young couple bought a funeral home in 1950 located on Main Street in Churubusco from Frances and Dasie Sonday.

After a stint in the military Lester graduated from embalming school in Indianapolis. He began work with Bob DeMoney and Bob Hollingsworth in Columbia City. “I guess what I saw as a young boy stuck with me. He and a neighbor saw a lady get hit by lightening. She turned black and we tried to revive her. The Waynedale Fire Department came and got her. She died and I never saw her again. I never forgot it and I guess that’s why I got interested in working with the dead,” said Lester.

The funeral home in Columbia City was right beside the home were Doris lived. “Her parents’ car was parked right beside where the ambulance was parked. I always hoped she was out there when I had to get that car,” he said with a twinkle in his eye.
