SOUTH WHITLEY — Contrary to the rest of the season, where Logan Irwin and Zac VanDeWater lead Whitko’s scoring, the Wildcats counted on senior Max Elder’s season-high 20 points to runaway with a 70-48 win against Southwood Friday night.
Southwood held the score close in the first quarter, only trailing by one, 14-13, at the end of the first eight minutes.
But Whitko turned on their high pressure defense, forcing turnovers and allowing for quick scoring.
“The defense was solid again,” Whitko head coach Rob Irwin. “They (Southwood) had a hard time scoring.”
Southwood only scored four points in the second quarter.
Logan Irwin and VanDeWater led the second quarter, scoring 10-of-14 points for the ’Cats and giving Whitko a 28-17 advantage over the Knights at halftime.
Logan Irwin led the game with 25 points and VanDeWater tallied 17.
“When we have three guys scoring in double figures, were going to win a lot of games,” coach Irwin said.
Elder took control in the second half, scoring 14 points and extending the lead to 48-33 in the third quarter.
“Max did a good job getting himself in position to score,” coach Irwin said.
The bulk of Elder’s points came in the third quarter where he scored 10 points.
Whitko finished the final quarter with 22 points, leaving the ’Cats with a 22-point advantage over the Knights, 70-48.
Whitko, now 9-2 and undefeated in the conference, is looking to lock up the Three Rivers Conference title early with four games remaining.
“We haven’t been beat yet, so we control our own destiny,” coach Irwin said.
