BLOOMINGTON — Five Whitley County athletes competed in the Indiana State Track Meet last weekend.

Three tracksters were named all-state — Samantha Roush, Katie Monk and Austin McClure placed in the top nine.

Columbia City’s Roush, who has finished 10th for the last two seasons, came in fifth in the 1,600-meter run Saturday.

“Sam ran as perfect of a race as she could,” Columbia City Head Track Coach Bob Fahl said. “She was really determined to get a medal.”

Fahl said she was able to take an inside lane and stay in the front of the pack througout the race.

Along with her medal, Roush also broke her own school record by two seconds. The previous record was 5:02.6, and Roush finished the mile in 5:00.33.

“She ran a great regional and I told her we needed the same intensity Saturday,” Fahl said. “She ran perfect splits.”

Monk, of Churubusco, came in sixth in the discus with a toss of 134 feet, 1 inch.

Her teammate, Austin McClure, was the lone boys’ representative in Whitley County. McClure placed seventh in the shot put with a heave of 55 feet, 2.75 inches.
