Roy “Sam” McCoy, 96

Roy G. “Sam” McCoy, 96, of Jefferson Township, Whitley County, died at 4:10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since September.

He was born Oct. 7, 1914 in Washington Township, Whitley County, a son of Orin Hubert and Edna Mae (Schinbeckler) McCoy. In 1926 his family moved to Jefferson Township. He graduated from Jefferson Center High School in 1933.

On June 28, 1941 he was united in marriage to Deloris M. Byroade. They made their home in Fort Wayne for six months before returning to the family farm in Jefferson Township. Mrs. McCoy died Nov. 27, 2008.

A lifelong farmer, he drove school bus for 19 years including seven years in Aboite Township with the remainder for Jefferson Center School.
He retired in 1986 from Byroade Bros. Siding & Awning with 32 years of service.

His memberships included I.O.O.F. for past 62 years (serving as Past Grand and Past District Deputy), Canton Division & Encampment Division of Fort Wayne I.O.O.F., Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, Ageless Iron Tractor Club and attended Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving relatives include a son, Allen H. (Annette) McCoy of Columbia City; two daughters, Sharon (Dan) Kraft of Fort Wayne and Patricia (Randy Brower) Minnick of Columbia City; a daughter-in-law, Marcia McCoy of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Edward L. McCoy; two infant grandchildren; a brother, Robert L. McCoy; and three sisters, Clela M. Esterline, Mary Watson and Jeanette Shultz.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Jefferson Chapel Cemetery.
The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with an Odd Fellow Service following the visitation followed by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter Service.
