Running of the turkeys

November 25, 2013

Columbia City High School’s Student Council invited Little Turtle Elementary School students and staff to participate in the Annual Turkey Run — a Thanksgiving funds and food collection for disadvantaged families within the district and the Whitley County community.

LTES students were given a dual challenge this year — raise one more Turkey Run dinner than last year and see who could raise the most funds. The contest was between kindergartner, first and second grade classes against third through fifth grade classes.

The students of LTES impressed Principal Tammy Weimer and staff by exceeding their expectations. These “generous” students and families, raised more than $2,100, enough to supply the community with 42 complete turkey dinners. Although both teams raised enough funds for 21 Turkey Run dinners, the kindergarten through second grade team raised a bit more money, therefore, winning the challenge. LTES celebrated by treating the students and staff with popcorn.
