Sandra C. Hamel, 77, of rural Columbia City, died at 2:30 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2014 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
She was born Nov. 16, 1936, in Fremont, Mich., a daughter of Frank and Alexandra (Cattanach) Hamel. She graduated from Cassopolis High School in Michigan.
Sandy enlisted in the Womans Army Corps to attend Clinical Laboratory Technologist School in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
She was the owner and director of Medical Arts Lab in Mishawaka for 12 years and Lab Director at South Bend Clinic Lab for six years.
After 30 years in the medical field, she left and moved to Goose Lake in Columbia City. Sandy and her partner, Sylvia Elbert, purchased Goose Lake Resort and Mexican Restaurant which they owned and operated for 13 years.
She loved spending time with her many friends and family. Her love for nature was obvious in her beautiful yard, her flowers and care of animals.
She especially loved her three cats, Snowey, Mathilda and Geraldine.
Survivors include her long time loving partner, Sylvia Elbert of Columbia City; a sister, Janice Taylor of Shallotte N.C.; a brother, Charles Hamel of Paw Paw, Mich.; a nephew and two nieces, Trent (Vanessa) Taylor of Shallotte N.C., Deyanna Taylor of Florida and Denyse Shelburn of Paw Paw Mich.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a nephew, Todd Taylor. There will be no visitation or service.
Preferred memorials are to Humane Society of Whitley County or donorâ€™s favorite charity.
