BLUFFTON â With track, in some cases winning isnât based on how well a team performs, but how the other teams place to shuffle around competitors scores.
Columbia Cityâs girls track team and Head Coach Bob Fahl, are thanking the other teamâs in Tuesday nightâs sectional meet at Bluffton.
âIâve always said, things have got to go right for your team, and the other teams have to help you,â Fahl said. âTonight, the other teams helped us.â
After a disappointing team finish in the Northeast Hoosier Conference meet, the Lady Eagles topped three NHC teams, including conference champion Bellmont by 24 points, to win the sectional title.
Bellmont beat Columbia City by 11 points in the NHC meet.
âThings didnât fall right for us at the conference. Other teams snuck in and we werenât quite as sharp,â Fahl said. âWe had to count on the other teams to help us.â
With just a 12-point lead over their opponents, the Lady Eagles sat and watched the final flight of the shot put, the determining event on whether or not theyâd be loading the bus with a sectional trophy.
With no throwers in the final flight, Fahl, and the Lady Eagles, could only sit and watch their competitors, hoping lower-ranked teams would place high enough to keep their close competitors from taking the lead.
With Wayne sitting in second place â according to the announcers at the meet â the Lady Generalâs top thrower heaved the shot put three feet farther than her season best, 37-feet 1-inch.
Columbia City counted on throwers from conference foe New Haven to step in and open the gap between the Wayne athletes â and they did.
The second Lady General placed seventh, putting Wayne just short of a win with 108 points, five away from the Lady Eagles. Homestead snuck in at second with 109 points.
Whitko also competed in the meet, scoring 35 points and placing seventh out of 12 teams. The Lady Wildcats advanced their 400-meter relay team and Josie Sparks advances to regionals next Tuesday at Northrop, along with Columbia City's team.View more articles in:
