CARROLL â The year-end wrestling tournament kicked off this weekend with all three Whitley County Schools competing in the Carroll Sectional.
Overall points determine only one team to move on to regionals; a fourth place finish or better on an individual level sends a matman to the next round.
Since 1993, the three schools have accounted for 12 of the 19 team wins at Carroll, including a run of eight straight by Columbia City.
Carroll, who claimed the title in six of the other seven years, won its own sectional with a point total of 187.50.
As a team, Churubusco got the better of the three by placing fifth overall (115.50), just in front of sixth-place Whitko (107) and Columbia City in seventh (93).
âItâs always nice to finish above the other county schools when youâre able to,â said Churubusco Head Coach Sam Riesen.
Individually, only Whitko placed a first-place champion in Cody Bays, while Eagle Russell Hazelet, âBuscoâs Chase Downing and Wildcat Colton LeTourneau each brought their respective teams second-place finishes.
Bays came into his 145-pound, second round match with a 16-3 record. He beat his Fort Wayne Northrop opponent by major decision, 18-7.
Columbia Cityâs Alan Trabert was the next to Bays, but lost a minute into their contest. Trabert finished in third.
