COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s Humane Shelter took in 310 stray dogs and cats from unincorporated areas in 2013, the first year of its agreement with the county.
In January of 2013, the Whitley County Council approved an agreement with the shelter where it would give $108 per stray animal, in an amount not to exceed $25,000.
After the first year of the agreement, Sandy Grube, director of the Whitley County Humane Shelter, said the financial support has been a great benefit.
“Without a doubt, without their help, we would be struggling,” she said. “It just makes a world of difference to have that money on-hand, to help pay for spays, neuters, shots and other expenses.”
The shelter has already had existing agreements with the individual municipalities in Whitley County — Columbia City, Churubusco, South Whitley and Larwill.
