COLUMBIA CITY â Itâs sport season, and nothing pricks the athleteâs heart like good, clean competition.
However, one Columbia City resident has chosen a rather unique field of competition.
Steve Schuman, of Columbia City, will vie for a top spot in the 2013 Indiana State Hand Corn Husking Contest, taking place Saturday in Bremen.
This will be his fifth year to compete, in which he has placed in the top five each year.
âIâve been around it. I grew up in a farming environment,â Schuman said. âThe competition is a challenge, and itâs interesting to see who shows up to compete.â
The event consists of each competitor having 20 minutes to husk as much corn as possible. Husked corn is then hauled by horses to a weigh-in station.
Winners are not determined just by weight alone. Competitorâs corn is cleaned, meaning excess silk and husks are removed and weighed separately. That weight counts against the corn totals.
