Simon L. Luther, 94, of Columbia City, died at 11:33 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted Wednesday.
He was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Washington Township, a son of Walter and Vera (Sheets) Luther. His formative years were spent in Washington Township. He graduated from Washington Center High School.
On Sept. 21, 1940, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Gradeless. They made their home in Columbia City for four years before moving to Laud. In September 2005 they returned to Columbia City.
He retired from Zollners Piston in 1982 with 40 years of service.
His memberships include Laud Christian Church and formerly Laud Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, Laud Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Zollner League golfer for 50 years and bowling for many years.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Betty; two children, Lex (Renee) Luther of Bear Lake and Melinda (Andy) Lowe of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Bosserman of Fort Wayne.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Luanne Freshour and a brother, Leonard Luther.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
