UP IN SMOKE: Col. City to amend fireworks ordinance

September 11, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — This Labor Day, questions were raised at a Columbia City Board of Works meeting regarding the use of consumer, or personal, fireworks.

According to Columbia City’s ordinance, fireworks are only allowed to be used on Labor Day and the Sunday before, but not the rest of the holiday weekend.

Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel received a call from a resident who requested that citizens be allowed to shoot off fireworks all weekend, sparking a temporary exception to the ordinance by the Board of Works for the 2013 Labor Day weekend.

“It seemed like a practical change to allow the whole weekend to be used for fireworks,” Daniel said.

Daniel approached the Columbia City Common Council Tuesday in reference to a more permanent change.
