Snow emergency extended

February 2, 2011

Whitley County's Level 1 snow emergency has been extended until 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to Whitley County Emergency Management Director Cathy Broxon-Ball. The snow emergency was previously set to expire at noon.

The Whitley County Commissioners have issued the following statement: “Whitley County is under a level 1 snow emergency. The general public should not travel unless absolutely necessary.”

A Level 1 Snow emergency states that:

3.1 A Level 1 Snow Emergency may be declared when roads have become snow covered and are drifting shut. When a Level 1 Snow Emergency is declared, (1) the general public should travel only when absolutely necessary, (2) persons having vehicles stranded are required to move them so as not to impede the flow of traffic nor the snow removal operations, and stranded vehicles will be removed at the owner’s expense, and (3) County agencies will not be directed to close. When a Level 1 Snow Emergency is declared, members of the public will be encouraged to contact their employer concerning policy rather than contacting the Sheriff’s Department, and will be advised to listen to the media for situation upgrades.
