COLUMBIA CITY — The various city entities, including Columbia City’s Street Department reported a busy recent couple of weeks at the Tuesday night common council meeting.
“We’ve been called in roughly five times already this year, all on overtime,” said Columbia City Street Department Superintendant Kelly Cearbaugh during his report to the board.
The calls Cearbaugh referred to were for street crews responding to the recent winter weather that has blanketed northern Indiana with a layer of slippery snow.
“We salted some intersections throughout the city due to flurries on Dec. 1,” Cearbaugh said in his report. “A crew of two was called in for a slick street.”
Cearbaugh said the on- duty man, plus one extra employee, was called in on a Saturday and Sunday Dec. 4-5 to put down material on intersections and streets.
On Monday, Dec. 6, four city trucks answered a demand created by lake effect snow, Cearbaugh reported. On Dec. 7 a Cearbaugh said a crew was called in early to plow, while on Dec. 10 and Dec. 12 crews were called to work on snow-related issues.
Aside from battling the snow, Cearbaugh said the department was able to finish leaf pickup and had storm-related brush to collect around the city.
“We made our final (leaf pickup) pass on both sides of town,” Cearbaugh reported.
“We hauled around 10 loads of brush from the storms.”
