COLUMBIA CITY — Rain, rain going away.
That’s what all the players say.
And coaches, officials and fans for that matter.
Thursday became the fourth consecutive day, the Columbia City class 3A softball sectional has been under water thanks to Mother Nature’s soggy weather conditions.
Columbia City athletic director Geoff Penrod has run his far share of tournaments but this is a new one for him.
“Never like this,” Penrod said after being asked if he’s dealt with something like this before. “The amount of rain and number of days it’s gone is something I’ve never seen.”
The decision to cancel came in at 9 a.m. Thursday.
With water still standing in the outfield at Morsches Park, Penrod notes the next move is back-to-back triple-headers with regional games set for Tuesday.
“All coaches and schools have agreed and we’re going to have three games Friday and three Saturday,” Penrod said. “If that doesn’t work out we’ll have to do three Saturday and three Monday.”
Columbia City will be the first of three games Friday starting at 4:30 p.m.
The new schedule has semifinal games at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday with the championship following at 6 p.m.
