Columbia City’s Rotary Club welcomed two of its own members to speak at a recent meeting.
Senator Jim Banks, and Rep. Kathy Heuer presented an update on this past session of the Indiana State Legislature.
Rep. Heuer started with an overview of how a bill moves through the legislature.
“The language of the bill has to be very specific,” said Heuer. “It is defined in one committee, referred to another, defined again, then back and forth until everyone agrees with how the bill is worded.”
Then the bill is debated until a vote is cast. The bill will eventually move to the governor for signature into law.
A particular favorite bill of Heuer’s was HB 1003 which calls for implementation of internships of high school students partnering with business companies to help define a career path to take. he end result is that the student will graduate with specific skills and knowledge in areas such that businesses are interested in hiring.
Heuer also spoke of HB 1002, a road expansion fund of 400 million dollars coming into North East Indiana with hopes that some of this will trickle down to Whitley County also, besides the I469/24 interchange in Fort Wayne.
