On to state: Local athletes compete in regionals; three advance to state finals

FORT WAYNE — Three Whitley County athletes are advancing to the Indiana State Track Finals in four events after strong placings in Northrop’s regional competition Tuesday night.

Columbia City’s Samantha Roush took second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:04.58, the state-qualifying standard.

Heather Monk from Churubusco is advancing in two events — the shot put and discus.

Monk threw the qualifying standard in both events. She placed second in the shot put with a heave of 41 feet, 9 inches. In the discus, Monk took third with a throw of 128 feet, 11 inches.

Columbia City’s Carlee Hearld tied for third in the high jump. She jumped 5 feet, 3.25 inches.

Kalisha Goree fell just short of the state finals in two events.
In the long jump, Goree placed sixth, falling just a half inch short of the state finals.

The Indiana State Track Finals are next Friday at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Pole vault, long jump and discus begin at 3 p.m. High jump and shot put are slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Preliminary running events are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. and opening ceremonies start at 6:10 p.m.
