Steven Mort, 50

Steven Wayne Mort, 50, of Pierceton, passed away at 9:59 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at South Bend Memorial Hospital as the result of an automobile accident. He was born on April 6, 1962, in Columbia City, the son of Rex D. and Mary Jane (Tenney) Mort.
He spent his lifetime in the Pierceton area graduating from Whitko High School with the class of 1981, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and football.
He then went onto college on a basketball scholarship, attending Glenoaks College in Centerville, Mich., and then graduated from Huntington College. He work on the Mort Family Farm for many years, then worked for Northern Lakes Electric, Warsaw and for the past 15 years he was a woodwork finisher for J. C. Hammon Construction in Leesburg. He loved to garden and was an avid golfer, deer hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Melissa D. McKinney of Pierceton; four children, Samatha A. (Chris Staley) Mort, Austin D. Mort, Blase M. McKinney and Aressa A. Tackwell all of Pierceton; father Rex D. Mort of Pierceton; mother, Mary Jane (Mike) Layton of Florida; one granddaughter, Lexee Grace Staley of Pierceton; two brothers, Tim A. and Mark W. (Mary) Mort both of Pierceton; two nephews, Justin (Alicia) Mort of Leesburg and Dillon Mort of Pierceton and one stepgrandfather, Ralph Thomas of Fort Wayne.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Sharon Brockhaus, Certified Funeral Celebrant officiating. The burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Mort Grandchildren Educational Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
