Stolen car found torched in county cornfield

October 6, 2010

A burned shell of a car stolen in Indianapolis was found this week in a local cornfield.
On Monday evening, a farmer working in his field called the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department to report he’d found a burned car amid the corn in the field.
According to police, the farmer said he was last in that area of the field about a week ago.
Although the Mercedes was destroyed by the fire, police found the vehicle identification number Tuesday afternoon.
According to the sheriff’s department, a tire and cornstalks were put in the car to help start the fire and ensure it destroyed the car.
Investigators said it was unlikely they would be able to get any forensic evidence from the car.
Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area within the last two weeks is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 244-6410.
