THEATER COMES DOWN: Still under investigation

February 24, 2012

SOUTH WHITLEY — Investigators are not 100 percent sure of the exact cause, but have pinpointed the location where Saturday’s fire in South Whitley’s Kent Theatre originated. The building, located at 220 S. State St., served most recently as the meeting place for Turning Point Church.

Dispatchers at Whitley County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 11:31 a.m. Saturday reporting the building, built in 1947, was on fire.
Fire crews from Cleveland and Washington townships, as well as Columbia City, responded, working around the clock for much of the weekend to contain the fire.

In the days that followed, Whitley County Fire Marshall Mike Vogely and Cleveland Township Fire Chief Terry Gardner perused the scene looking for the fire’s origin as well as maybe a cause. Also involved in the investigation were members of the state fire marshal’s office and forensic investigators representing an insurance company.
