Editor’s note: The following is an excerpt of a historical article published in the Whitley County Historical Society’s December 2013 edition of The Bulletin. Included is information originally published by The Post & Mail in October 2009.
COLUMBIA CITY — In 2009, Paul Johnson, of Columbia City who is now deceased, visited The Post & Mail to share an article that had appeared in the American Truck Historical Society, “Wheels of Time” magazine, written by Kiley Miller, about an unusual sight that came through Columbia City 70 years ago, in 1939.
“I saw it when I was six years old,” said Johnson. In 1939, Columbia City was visited by a behemoth of a truck-labratory on its maiden voyage from Chicago where it was built, eventually to reach Boston and then ship to Antarctica.
