Toddler found dead in Whitley Co. pool

May 23, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Drowning has been ruled the preliminary cause of death for a toddler who was found floating face-down in a Whitley County swimming pool this week.

A three-year-old boy drowned Tuesday morning at a residence southeast of Columbia City.

The relative told police that before finding the boy in the pool, they realized he was not in the house, and the back door leading to the pool was open, according to conservation officers.

Jefferson Township firemen were dispatched to 6250 E. Ind. 14 at 11:30 a.m., and law enforcement officers worked to resuscitate the child until paramedics arrived. Officials said he was unresponsive when he was pulled from the pool, and never regained consciousness.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
