COLUMBIA CITY — Challenging oneself to improve — and perseverance.

Those were the keys to success for Columbia City High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2013.

The valedictorian is Aakash K. Patel, the son of Kirit and Sangita Patel. The salutatorian is Tiffany Nicole Harber, the daughter of Ed and Sue Harber.

Both challenged themselves to end up where they are now. Harber said she started ranked 36th in the class her freshman year and is now second.

“I took nine AP (advance placement) classes, which is almost more than anyone else in our grade,” she said.

Patel agreed the more difficult courses helped him.

“Hard work and picking the right classes, that is pretty much it,” he said. “A lot of kids would have had a chance to be in the top 10, or the top 2, but they didn’t have any AP classes.”
