COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s fire department has found another way to give back to the community at Christmas time.

After more than 125 years of the Christmas Eve candy and orange giveaway at the Courthouse, the department is now helping children with the Toys for Tots program.

The department is partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves under the guidance of the Leatherneck Coffee Club of Northern Indiana, which was founded in Columbia City in 2001.

Since then, thousands of children in need have received toys at Christmas.

Columbia City’s fire department will be holding a “fill-the-boot” campaign at the intersection of Main and Van Buren Streets Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise funds for the toy drive.
