TRADITIONAL SCHOOL COLORS? : Community, coaches discuss CCHS’s black jerseys

In Columbia City’s boys basketball team’s run to semi-state in 2011, the student section, parents, fans and cheerleaders all wore black clothing. COLUMBIA CITY — Uniform color at Columbia City High School has created a buzz in the community.

While some are accepting of the more modern look of black sports gear, many feel that tradition is lost by getting away from the school’s colors — maroon and gold.

“We are stepping away from tradition and school spirit by making changes with uniforms,” said Candy Pease, CCHS alumnus. “I hate it. We compete with another school that has black and gold (Churubusco) as their school colors and they are the Eagles as well. Where is our originality? Shouldn’t we show our school spirit?”

Paul Sade, Churubusco’s head football coach and assistant athletic director, said personally he doesn’t have a problem with Columbia City’s changes.

“By the same token — we will never go away from old gold and black, as long as I’m here,” Sade said. “Those are our colors and that’s what we’ll wear.”

But some coaches and fans alike enjoy a change of scenery in Columbia City’s sports.

“I think the black with maroon and gold gives it a little pop,” said Brandon Marshall, CCHS graduate. “I like the idea.”
