WABASH — Offense wins tickets, defense wins games, and rebounds win championships.
Friday night at Wabash, Whitko proved they are ready to win championships by out-rebounding, out-scoring, and attacking defensively to gain a 78-45 advantage over the Apaches on their home court.
Not only did Whitko’s offense come out firing, with 26 points in the first quarter, but the Wildcat defense held Wabash to three points for the first five minutes of the game.
But it was rebounding that proved Whitko — ranked No. 6 in class 3A — is capable of winning more than just the Three Rivers Conference title.
Derek Snep had five offensive rebounds for put-backs in the first quarter alone, giving the ’Cats extra opportunities to score.
“We out rebounded them early, that made a big difference,” Whitko head coach Rob Irwin said.
   Snep also recorded 11 points.
Of Whitko’s 20 second quarter points, Logan Irwin tallied 16.
Irwin led the game in scoring with 31.
The ’Cats had a 46-28 lead going into the second half and utilized several different players to continue gaining on their lead.
Travis Weigold scored six points in the final 10 minutes of the game, along with several other non-starters.
The score settled at 78-45 after several free throws from both teams.
The Wildcats are preparing for North Miami and Manchester in the next two weeks. Beating them would give Whitko the TRC title.
“We know we have two more to go to win the conference,” coach Irwin said.
