TREASURER: Don’t wait to pay property taxes

October 29, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Taxes — for some it is a five letter word that causes financial frustration. However, for Laurell Hodges dealing with taxes means its just another day as the Whitley County Treasurer.

Property taxes for the second annual installment are due Tuesday, Nov. 12. Although statements were mailed earlier in the year, Hodges wants property owners across the county to remember the date and to keep in mind that Monday, Nov. 11 is a holiday and county offices, including the Treasurer’s office, will be closed.

“It is a good idea to not wait until the last minute,” Hodges said. “If you want to avoid long lines, it’s best to come into our office the week before.”

Some property owners elected to have their property taxes included in their monthly mortgage payment.

As the owner makes the payment, the mortgage lender deducts the funds from the payment and holds the reserves in escrow. Twice a year, as property taxes come due, the lender makes the tax payment.

In theory, the escrow system works, but Hodges cautions property owners to not take for granted that their taxes are paid.
