TREE STAND REMOVAL TUMBLE: Warsaw man airlifted after fall from tree stand

NORTH WEBSTER – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a tree stand accident at Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area near North Webster in Kosciusko County that occurred Saturday, January 7.

Kosciusko County Dispatch received a 911 call at 1:24 p.m. obtaining information that a hunter fell from an elevated location.

According to Conservation Officers, Barry D. Self, age 51, of Warsaw, was attempting to remove his tree stand when he fell approximately 13 feet to the ground. Barry Self’s 17-year-old son was with him during the accident and called 911. Self landed on his left side causing injuries to his back and arms. He was transported out of the Fish & Wildlife Area by Syracuse EMS and Airlifted by Parkview Air to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Many accidents occur each year as a result of hunters removing tree stands. Conservation Officers recommend the use of a fall arrest system or safety harness while removing tree stands.

Units that assisted Conservation Officer on scene were Syracuse Ambulance 7, Syracuse Ambulance 8, Syracuse Fire and North Webster Fire.
