SOUTH WHITLEY — A backhoe was the tool of choice used to knock down the charred walls of Kent Theater, South Whitley. After a fire damaged the building, the structure was untouched for almost a year while South Whitley town officials waited on owner, Mark Minick, to come to terms with his insurance company. South Whitley Town Council members pressed Minick to start demolition by Dec. 29, 2012.

Minick had some work started before December. Materials were removed from the building as well as items that could be salvaged. Before a large part of the demolition began, crews were inside the building removing rubble and remnants left from the fire.

Craig Wagner, Whitley County’s chief building inspector, has made several appearances at town council meetings to keep members informed of their options in regards to the building.

“There is progress being made,” Wagner said. “I know the owner was trying to work on things, but now he’s moving forward with the demolition.”
