UPDATE: Kos. County makes arrest in Barbee Lake shooting

December 19, 2013

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives have released more information and names that are related to the shooting incident that occurred last night near the Barbee Lake Chain south of North Webster.

Officers responded last night to a 9-1-1 call of a potential shooting at the address of #44 EMS B10 lane, Pierceton, at approximately 7:18 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene and located the potential suspected shooter, Sonya Lynn Armontrout, 42, Warsaw, who surrendered immediately without incident. Deputies entered the residence and located the homeowner, Steven L. Carman, 51, suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Paramedics from the North Webster E.M.S. arrived and summoned Kosciusko County Coroner Michael Wilson to the scene who pronounced Carmen dead due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives, along with members of the Kosciusko County Major Crimes Unit, have determined that Armontrout had broken-into the residence of Carmen earlier in the evening and hid in a bedroom closet. Carmen, along with a Joseph A. Glant, 54, Warsaw, entered into the home, at which point Armontrout suddenly exited the closet and discharged a 9 mm handgun striking Glant in his lower torso. Armontrout then reportedly discharged the handgun several times at Carmen, striking him in the chest area multiple times. Armontrout then proceeded to stab Carmen in the back with a knife as he stumbled down a hallway to the living room area. Armontrout subsequently followed Carmen to the living room, and then proceeded to discharge the handgun, shooting Carmen in the head multiple times. Crime Scene technicians had recovered both the firearm along with the knife at the scene, collaborating the witness information.

Glant was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition. Officers had also initially located two small children after arriving at the scene that were determined to be the children of both Carmen and Armontrout. They were found uninjured and placed into the custody of the Department of Child Services last evening.

Armontrout was arrested and preliminarily charged with murder, attempted murder, and burglary by the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office. She is currently being held without bond on a prosecutorial hold.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was assisted in the investigation by officers from the North Webster Police Department, Syracuse Police Department, Winona Lake Police Department, Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Indiana State Police.

The Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office advises that the defendant’s charge is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
