VACANT SEAT: City holds off on building authority appointment

September 12, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Though Columbia City has a vacant seat on the Whitley County Building Authority, the Common Council decided to wait to fill the position, which was formerly held by Ray Whiting who passed away.

“This authority has been inactive. It hasn’t been used for a long time,” Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel told the council Tuesday.

Daniel said he hopes to meet with a county commissioner to discuss dissolving the authority, which hasn’t been used since City Hall was remodeled in the early 1990s. He said a dissolution would be a joint resolution by the city and county, and depending on the financial status of the jail, there may be some technicalities to work through.

“I may be coming to you asking to dissolve it,” Daniel told the council. “But because it’s not dissolved yet, the question is — do we make the appointment or do we wait to see if its going to be dissolved?”
