NAPPANEE — Not only did Friday night’s 51-44 win at NorthWood end a three-game losing streak for the Whitko boys’ basketball team but it changed the record books.
Another Wildcat joined the best to play basketball as a Wildcat.
With his 13-point performance against the Panthers — including a crucial three-point play with 47.9 seconds left — senior Zac VanDeWater joined the elite 1,000 point club at Whitko High School.
The six-foot-six-inch forward stood eight points away from the mark entering Friday night after posting 22 points against Carroll earlier in the week.
VanDeWater is the ninth Wildcat in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Teammate Logan Irwin was the last to make the list in 2010 when he scored 44 points in the sectional opener as a sophomore.
Others in the elite group of players at Whitko include: Steve Nicodemus (1991) 1,474, Zach Henson (1997) 1,231, Chad Christman (1989) 1,153, Jeff Peters (1984) 1,151, Mike Kline (1987) 1,046, Alex Frantz (2003) 1,045, Jim Juillerat (1988) 1,016.
VanDeWater went 5-for-10 in the Wildcats win Friday.
It was the first of two meetings between the schools in a week. Tuesday, Whitko (15-5) and NorthWood (14-6) open the class 3A Wawasee sectional with a 7 p.m. rematch.
Coming into his senior season, VanDeWater committed to play collegiate basketball at Indiana Wesleyan University.
In his four seasons with Whitko, VanDeWater has helped the Wildcats to a 50-37 record including a sectional championship in 2009.
