Verlin Bentz, 96, formerly of rural Columbia City, died at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation, Fort Wayne where he had been a resident since 2010.
He was born May 15, 1916, in South Whitley, a son of the late Oliver P. and Winnie (Walgamuth) Bentz. His formative years were spent in South Whitley.
On Oct. 24, 1942, he was united in marriage to Wathina Ilene Coy. They made their home in Allen County later moving to the lake areas in Whitley County.
He began his employment with the former Gripnut in South Whitley and then Dana Corp, Fort Wayne with 30 years of service.
He enjoyed gardening, sporting events, carpentry work and fishing.
Surviving relatives include his wife of 70 years, Ilene; a daughter, Linda (Dean) Leas of Lake Port, Fla.; grandchildren, Donald L. Bentz of Tampa, Fla., Deanna (Scott) Woods of Churubusco, Sharri (Kevin) Creed of Fort Wayne, Rob Bentz of Tampa, Fla. and Kelly (Joe) Wolter of Fort Wayne; nine great- grandchildren and two sisters, Mamie Lucille Wood of Kissimmee, Fla. and Mabel Reed of South Whitley.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Lee Bentz; two brothers, Harold and Gail Bentz and two sisters, Vivian M. Richard and Mary Jane Carter
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be at Adams Cemetery. The visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
