One injured in Loon Lake house fire Print E-mail
Thursday, May 22 2008

Five fire departments rushed to put out a massive house fire Tuesdsay afternoon on Loon Lake that injured one of the home’s occupants.
The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. at 2353 W. 700 N. on the county line with Noble County.
Oxygen tanks in the home didn’t help the situation either.
“There were oxygen tanks exploding so that only helped it burn,” John Workman, chief of Thorncreek Township’s fire deparmtent, said today.
Thorncreek, Columbia, Noble, Albion and Richland Township fire departments all responded to the scene as well as two Whitley County EMS units.
“The mutual aid in this area is fantastic,” Workman said.
The home’s only occupant suffered some second degree burns to her hands. Workman said she was treated and released Tuesday from Parkview Whitley Hospital and would be going to to the burn center at St. Joe Hospital today for outpatient treatment.
Black smoke could be seen billowing into the air from as far as three miles away as crews worked to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible.
In addition to the home being on fire, a car parked in the driveway close to the house also demanded the prompt attention from firefighters, who doused the car with water to keep it from catching fire or exploding.
The Whitley County Fire Investigation Team and state fire marshall’s office responded to the scene, and could not rule out a candle as the possible ignition source. The investigation continues today at the scene.
As of Tuesday night, the local American Red Cross representative had not been contacted about providing aid to the family.
