Two nurses offer help to residents Print E-mail
Tuesday, June 03 2008

Nurses just aren’t about giving shots and taking blood pressures. They can be a wealth of information, too.
Two registered nurses, Julie Wendel and Deb  Francis, are taking their knowledge and offering it to local residents at a series of classes this summer.
Recognizing that doctors’ offices are not always the best places to provide patient education, for a variety of reasons, Wendel and Francis saw a need to provide a way to help people understand issues and care for any number of health problems that they may be facing.
The sessions are designed to be a relaxed and informative conversation about health topics. Francis and Wendel plan to  begin with a series on diabetes.
The first session of the diabetes topic is planned for 4:30 to 6 p.m. June 11 and covers nutrition. The second session is July 2 and is entitled “Know Your Numbers” and the third is Aug. 6 entitled “Know Your Activities.”  The classes will be held at the South Whitley Public Library. Handouts will be provided.
Wendel said, while the focus of the first topic is diabetes, there is information available that is beneficial to everyone and attendance is not limited to diabetics. After the initial topic, Wendel and Francis hope to branch off into other topics.
The sessions are free and open to the public.
