Old tractors find new field to work Print E-mail

Once again antique tractors and farm equipment will fire up and be on display at the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds. This year the event is June 12-14, and everything is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Mizpah Shriners Antique Power Club.
As a warmup to the event, there will be an antique tractor drive from the Shrine horse patrol grounds north of the city on state Route 9 to Chain O’ Lakes State Park starting at 8 a.m. this Saturday. There will be a cookout for participants, and all the tractors will be on display.
The power show will have several different activities beginning June 13 and extending to the evening. There will be two different divisions of tractors in the pulls, with light antique tractors in four weight classes beginning at 3 p.m. Weigh-in is at 1 p.m., and there will be recognition awards for first and second places. Antique tractors must be more than 30 years old.
Then division II tractors will have first hook at 6 p.m. in seven weight classes. There will be cash awards for the top three places.
On Friday there also will be a flea market and vendors, a 50/50 drawing, tractor games and contests and kid activities and games.
Then on Saturday, the heavy antique tractors (beginning at 5,500 pounds) will pull at 3 p.m., followed by street-legal four-by-four trucks pulling at 6 p.m.
The entry fee is $10 for tractors and $25 for the trucks.
There will be kids’ activities and games from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including a kiddie tractor pull at noon with various age groups and no entry fee. Prizes will be given out. Mizpah Antique Car Club vehicles will be on display, a benefit auction at 10 a.m., another 50/50 drawing, a shotgun and power washer raffle, along with vendors and the flea market.
“Everything is free and open to the public,” secretary Harold Krider said. “This is not for Shriners only.
“We want people to come and have a good time. This is our way to thank people.”
The benefit auction on Saturday will include whatever people donate. In the past it has included tools, garden tractors, furniture and landscaping stones.
The proceeds go to benefit Shriner charities such as a transportation fund and a van replacement fund.
The Shriners emphasized that craft and flea market and parts vendors are welcome.
For more information call Krider at 609-5901, president Jim Wall at 356-0357, treasurer Steve Sickafoose at 723-4762 or Tom Atkins at 396-2424.
