If you had a colorful character in your family who was known to Whitley County, or have memories that a newcomer might want to hear, now there is an opportunity to tell your story for the generations to come. The Peabody Public Library, under the guidance of Deb Lowrance is beginning an Oral History project, similar to the Veterans’ History Project, which will collect interviews, either on audio, video, or written, to compile and catalog for the Peabody Public Library Indiana Room collection. “Much of the ‘old’ Whitley County has disappeared - downtown businesses, landmark buildings, farms and schools. Younger people and newcomers to the county like to know what was here before they came. This would also aid genealogists and family historians,” Lowrance, assistant reference librarian at Peabody, said. Ideally, the interviews would be done by library staff or volunteers at the library or other designated places. Lowrance would like to meet with the Whitley County Historical Society, the Whitley County Genealogical Society, Friends of the Library and the school history and/or government classes “to explain the project, generate interest and perhaps enlist volunteers to interview and to do the interviewing, as well.” Dani Tippmann, director of the Whitley County Historical Museum has offered space on Old Settlers Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 26, at the Historical Society to inform the public. Staff hope to set up interviews as the Old Settlers register, or perhaps do some interviews at registration. Anyone wishing to participate or offer suggestions of interviewees may e-mail Lowrance at
