By ANDREW SHULTZ Sports Editor It was rumored but Monday night it was official. At the Smith-Green Community Schools board meeting, former Carroll assistant coach Michael McBride was hired as the new head coach of the Churubusco boys’ basketball team. Athletic director Lee Etzler said McBride fit everything the Eagles were looking for. “The interview committee was very impressed with Mr. McBride’s background in all aspects of the game and we are excited about him being here.” As for McBride, he is ready to get started. “I’m excited about the opportunity to come here and build a program,” McBride commented after the meeting. “I know the last couple of years the basketball team has struggled here and I’m just excited to get in there and start working with the kids.” When practice does get under way it’s apparent what McBride’s team will work on first and foremost. “We’re really going to concentrate and focus on our defense,” McBride said. “Defense is what wins. We hang our hats on our defense. We’re going to guard people and they’re going to earn their points. If they beat us they are going to beat a good defensive team.” With the success of other programs like football and baseball at Churubusco, McBride looks to join those ranks. “We’re going to try to build on the success the football and baseball teams have had,” McBride noted. “Coach Etzler and coach Grove have done a great job here and that tells me that there are athletes here.” Starting up his coaching career in 1995, McBride was first the student then the teacher, playing at Bethel College for four seasons and helping his team win a NAIA championship and amass a 126-27 record in his tenure there. McBride’s goal of coaching began at Northridge High School as a volunteer varsity assistant before moving to Carmel High School as head coach of the junior varsity squad. The first head coaching job for McBride came at his alma mater of Triton High School. In four seasons, McBride led Triton to its first ever class 2A sectional title with a combined record of 37-48. Most recently, McBride comes from the 2008 Northeast Hoosier Conference Champion Carroll where he served under the coaching staff of head coach Marty Beasley as varsity assistant for three seasons. McBride hopes to use the experience he has gained and share his excitement with the fans of Churubusco. “I’ve had a lot of experience and been doing this for 13 years now and hopefully I can bring some excitement to Churubusco High School as far as the basketball program is concerned.” |
