for The Post & Mail

The final announcement made at the Mr. and Miss Whitley County 4-H Scholarship Program led the audience to standing ovation as Adam Hoffman and Hannah Bray were named the 2008 Mr. & Miss Whitley County.  The Jason Smith Auditorium in Churubusco was filled with people and excitement as more than 3,900 scholarship dollars were distributed to a number of 4-H members through out the evening.
The first award, although it was not a scholarship went to Kevin Morse. Cindy Zollinger Co-director opened the program honored Kevin Morse, a plaque and T-shirt for 10 years of commitment to Whitley County 4-H serving each year as the master of ceremonies.
The program proceeded with the production number choreographed by Danielle Genth, all 17 contestants danced to the song “Canned Heat”.  After the production number Morse introduced and thanked the countless number of volunteers and 4-H leadership.
Contestants introduced themselves and thanked their sponsor then proceed across the stage to model their professional attire.  While contestants changed into their evening wear, David Addison announced the B.V. Widney and Teghtmeyer award winners.  The B.V. Widney award is bestowed on the 4-Her who best exemplifies the ideal 4-H member. This year the B.V. Widney award went to Samuel Keirn.  Addison also announced Laura Kessie as the Teghtmeyer award winner for her outstanding community service.  The Tenure awards sponsored by Farm Bureau were presented by Bill Leeuw to Brett Slack and Brandy Kyler.
To conclude the judging each contestant modeled their evening attire followed by an impromptu question based from each contestant’s profile.  While the final scores were tabulated 2007 Mr. & Miss Whitley County, Elizabeth Parish and Joel Genth gave their farewell addresses.
Parish gave many thanks to all the volunteers and followed with a personal thanks to each family member, “Mom, you are the only one in world that would stay up past eleven o’clock to help me finish my projects at the last minute” and “Dad you are the only one who can put up with mom and I while working on my projects,” leaving the audience members with tears and laughter Parish concluded her final farewell with the 4-H pledge.
Genth also gave many thanks to friends and family, he also offered words of advice for next year’s king, “Get it on paper! Dates, time and location, get it all down.” Apologizing one last time for forgetting to send flowers to Parish while she was at the State Fair Pageant, Genth presented her with a large bouquet of flowers to conclude the farewell speeches.
As smiles of 17 excited contestants wait to hear the results from the final tabulation, their eager faces were framed with flowers and décor from former queens as their dresses and sashes hung on either side of the stage.
To continue the suspense, the Hester Adams honor group and award winners were announced. The Hester Adams award is based on overall 4-H achievement, tenure and all-around character in the 4-H program. Brandy Kyler, Lindsey Rohrbach, and Olivia Western were announced as the Hester Adams honor group.  Presented with a plaque, polo shirt and scholarship dollars, Cody Lamle and Adam Hoffman were the Hester Adams award winners.
