Four local township fire departments spent their Tuesday afternoon battling a fire on the second story of a house in Laud. The residents were able to make it out of the home without suffering any injuries, but the home suffered smoke damage throughout, according to Chad Nix, chief of the Jefferson Township Fire Department. The most extensive damage suffered from the fire itself was in a bedroom on the second floor of the home in the 8000 block of South Clark Street. Nix said the second floor suffered fire damage from the incident, with smoke having filled the rest of the home as well. Jefferson, Union, Washington and Columbia townships all responded to the fire. “That way we can ensure there will be enough manpower at the scene,” Nix said. In addition to offering aid to fight the fire, Columbia Township brought their insulation vacuum to ensure none of the remaining insulation would rekindle. The Whitley County Fire Investigation Team responded to the scene, but Nix said he had not yet seen the report from the investigation. The local Red Cross chapter is offering clothing vouchers to the residents of the home. Officials said the residents had already made arrangements to stay somewhere else and did not need assistance in getting a hotel room. |
