When Churubusco high school students start school Monday there will be a new gleam coming from the gymnasium. The high school recently completed a two-week refinishing project on the basketball court which also included a new varnish coat for the middle school court. According to Churubusco athletic director Lee Etzler, the heavy use of the court led to the repair. “The gymnasium gets a lot of use and its needed some work recently,” Etzler said. “After the guys were done it looked amazing. It really looks like a brand-new floor and a whole new look.” The project started in the last week of June and was completed in the first week of July. Authentic Hardwood Floors Inc., based out of Elkhart, were hired for the job that was estimated to cost between $11,000 and $12,000. The high school gymnasium was sanded down to its original wooden flooring. Busted and worn floorboards were replaced before a new coat of varnish was applied. A new feature added in the repainting was a new eagle head logo to the center court circle along with the words Churubusco on one endline and Eagles on the other. Nearly 10 years since its last face lift, Etzler noted it needed more work this time around. “It was something we have been wanting to do,” Etzler commented. “For about the past 10 years there were new coats added but this time they took it down to the bare wood and replaced boards.” The refinished floor is the first of what Etzler hopes will be a few more improvement projects to the gymnasium. Eventually, Etzler hopes to repaint the walls in the gym along with reorganizing the championship banners and other flags hanging on the walls. |
