It may not have looked good at first but Columbia City girls golf led its Tuesday match when it counted the most. At the end. After seeing their first three players fall to their opponents, the Lady Eagle Olivia Western came in with a fourth score of 52 that won the match for Columbia City 187-191. Seniors Courtney Hinen and Emily Yoder led the way for Columbia City. Hinen came off the front nine at Eagle Glen Golf Course with a team-low of 42 which was narrowly outdone by medalist Audrey Ortiz of Bellmont who shot 41. Yoder posted a round of 48 in the No. 2 match-up, but Columbia City was again beaten when Mallorie Phegley was able to do better at 44. Sophomore Rachel Hazelet kept it close with a 45 but a 45 by Bellmont’s Kaitlin Geyer gave the Lady Braves a four-stroke lead with one score remaining. Columbia City’s final score turned out to be eight strokes better when Olivia Western shot a 52. The difference put the Lady Eagles on top by four strokes 187-191, giving CC its first win of the season and first in the Northeast Hoosier Conference. The Columbia City junior varsity was also in action. Four JV scores were led by Lauren Holloway’s 48. Deanna Beckner finished at 50. McKenzie Smith came in at 55 while Natalie Angel rounded out the scores at 56. Competition continues today with a busy week for Columbia City. The Lady Eagles face Northrop at home today before hosting NHC foe Homestead Thursday. |
