Bike tour race headed to city Print E-mail

If you need something fun and adventurous in your life, the Whitley County Optimist Club has just the event for you.
On Sept. 21, the Optimist Club is hosting the Tour de Loops II, a bicycle touring event.
The club took the same concept from when the event first started out as a fundraiser for the 4-H bicycle club, but now all proceedings go “into child related activities like children’s photo ID’s or to help with child safety seats,” said Eric Blank, member of the Optimist Club and leader of the Whitley County Bike Club.
“The Optimist Club is a group of adults that like to work with kids.  Anyone can join,” Blank said.
Anyone can also participate in the Tour de Loops II event.  There are four 25 mile routes each starting and finishing at the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds in Columbia City. Loops vary from flat to rolling hills.
“We have a 10 mile family loop, you don’t have to be experienced. But this year we put a new twist in it with a new option, the Knobby Tire Loop (15-miles) which is a mountain bike off roading type of trail,” Blank explained. Each loop has rest stops with snacks and emergency services will be available if needed.
One can register the day of the event starting at 8 a.m. Pre-registration ends after September 1st.
The cost is then $20.00 for participants, $15.00 for students, and $13.00 for Seniors.
During the touring event, there will be a free buffet lunch at the 4-H center for the participants until 4 p.m.
“Anyone can stop and grab a sandwich or something to drink,” says Blank.
For more information about the Optimist Club or the Tour de Loops II Bicycle Touring Event, call Jim Nolin, the clubs President, at 691-0106.
“I thought it went very well last year, and compared to last year, we are reversing our trails,” Blank said.
“There is no racing involved. You can go as fast as you want, but it’s just a pleasant Sunday ride and yet fun and adventurous.”
