’Busco council trying to find place for pool Print E-mail

As town council members in Churubusco mull the details of a presentation from a local committee that would like the town to have a pool, one question at the forefront of members’ minds is where it would be built.
The local committee is asking for land at the town park, but the council and park board need to look at long-term plans for the land before deciding on a land donation.
“It would be a great addition to the community, but we need to find the answers to several questions,” Frank Kessler, council member, said at the council’s Wednesday meeting.
Council member John Hart agreed, saying that the placement for the proposed pool needs to be ironed out before any type of land donation or deeding over of an area would be completed.
Currently, the pool committee is asking for about two acres of land in the town’s park.
At least one of the proposed areas is not a possibility because of drainage and water sheds on the park ground.
Another area where it could possibly be  built is fairly close to the wooded area, which could mean more clean up of the facility and water in the pool.
Council members also want to check with the local park board to see what future plans it has for land so any donation to the pool committee wouldn’t conflict with expansion of the park.
As for the financial interest, according to the presentation made to the council at its Sept. 17 meeting, the town would not have to fund or pay for the operation of the pool.
“If there is a financial loss, it wouldn’t come back to the town,” Viv Sade, president of the council, said.
Hart said the town could not afford to have an interest in the pool and lose as much money on the operation of it as other towns and communities lose.
He and town clerk-treasurer Gerri Johnson cited figures provided by the clerk’s office in Columbia City, which showed that Burnworth Pool has lost several thousand dollars per year in recent years.
Council members did not make any commitments to deed land from the park to the pool committee and will talk with the park board about any future plans for land and try to get more concrete answers to questions before moving forward with a decision.
