A Fort Wayne man was arrested this week after a car chase that reached speeds of 90 mph and a foot chase through a lake community. Thirty-one-year-old Howard L. Martin was charged with driving while suspended, reckless driving, operating while intoxicated, operating while intoxicated per se, resisting law enforcement and theft after the ordeal Monday night, according to the case report and charging documents. According to the report, Churubusco Deputy Marshal Adam Swinehart was parked on the south side of town watching traffic Monday night when he clocked Martin’s car at more than 20 mph above the posted speed. As Martin continued north through town, his car was allegedly weaving in his lane and across the center line before Swinehart tried to stop him north of town on U.S. 33, according to the report. Martin pulled over, but then allegedly sped away and reached speeds of 90 to 95 mph on U.S. 33. Swinehart stated in his report that he backed off of Martin at least once because the speeds were getting too fast for the wet and curvy road conditions. During a straightaway in Noble County on U.S. 33, a Whitley County sheriff’s deputy got in front of Martin, but was then passed. According to the report, the deputy got in front of Martin again, but he went off road and passed the deputy. The chase then went south on state Route 109 to the Bear Lake area where Martin allegedly jumped from the still-rolling car and ran on foot. Martin then ran through several yards and a house where the resident was on the porch at the time before local and Noble County police were able to catch him. Police later found that Martin did not own the car in which he had fled, and also had warrants out of Allen County. He told police he ran because he wanted to see his pregnant girlfriend before he went to jail, according to the report.
