Slippery road conditions were factor in crash in northeaster Whitley County.
By CHRIS MEYERS Staff writer A single vehicle wreck in Whitley County was one of three to claim a life Monday in Northeast Indiana as drivers dealt with the first slick roads of the season. According to police, 50-year-old Joseph Auer of Churubusco was a passenger in a van that rolled onto its side at about 4 p.m. at the intersection with county Road 300 North and state Route 205. Twenty-three-year-old Ashley Cordonva was driving the van westbound on county Road 300 North and was approaching the three-way intersection with county Road 675 East and state Route 205 when the van crossed to the other side of the road and hit an embankment, according to a news release from the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department. According to the report, the road was covered with snow and Cordova lost control on the slick surface. The van then flipped onto its passenger side and landed facing back to the east. Smith Township firefighters, with the help of a tow truck that was rushed to the scene, had to lift the van off Joseph, who had been partially ejected. Firefighters also helped two others from the van who were able to walk to nearby ambulances with some assistance. Fifty-year-old Patrick Caddy, also of Churubusco, was treated for chest pain. A third passenger in the van, 19-year-old Sam Dirring of Churubusco reported minor pain from the wreck. Cordova suffered a back injury. All were transported to Parkview Whitley Hospital. The Samaritan was called to the scene, but bad weather forced it to return to Parkview. It did, however make the scene of another wreck Monday night near the Allen County line. The wreck was reported shortly before 10 p.m. on Old Trail Road. Initial reports indicated that responders first on the scene found a pickup truck on its side in a field and a person trapped inside. The truck had rolled at least twice. Once rescuers freed the driver, she was transported by Samaritan to Fort Wayne.Further details were not yet available. Fatal wrecks were also reported Monday in Allen and Steuben counties.
