Clerk-Treasurer Gerri Johnson makes trip to Indy for presentation.
Article Contributed At a Statehouse ceremony Monday, Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman officially awarded the Town of Churubusco a $500,000 Community Focus Fund grant for water system improvements. The town had received notification early that they would receive the grant. The Town of Churubusco will use the grant to upgrade its water treatment system. This project will install a new 720-gallon-per-minute iron filtration plant. This project will reduce the iron in the water system which will allow the system to operate more efficiently, and also residents will enjoy water with reduced iron content. The grant helps offset the cost of the $2.6 million project, and keeps expected rate increases lower. A public hearing on the second of three proposed rate hikes is set for Wednesday with council members voting on the issue after the hearing. A first increase of 30 percent has already been passed, and the upcoming hearing proposes a 40 percent increase. A third rate hike, another 30 percent is planned for the future. The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) administers the grants, which are funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Twenty-seven communities and counties received grants, totaling more than $11.5 million. “I thank the participants in the Town of Churubusco for championing this project to support community development. Their innovation, commitment and partnership will build on the strengths of their community, and support our vision for economic development in the State of Indiana.” The Community Focus Fund grants are awarded twice annually through a competitive application process. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to: community and senior centers, special needs facilities, libraries, water system improvements, storm drainage projects, and sewer system improvements. |
