Parkview ready to seek rezoning request Print E-mail
Saturday, January 03 2009
By CHRIS MEYERS
Staff Writer
Parkview Health Systems Inc. is ready to ask Columbia City to rezone the property where a new hospital has been planned.
The request to rezone the land on the south side of the intersection of U.S. 30 with state Route 205 will come before the city plan commission at its 7 p.m. Monday meeting.
Dave Sewell of the Columbia City-Whitley County Joint Planning and Building Department said the rezoning request is the first step to be taken with the city in getting everything in order for when construction is ready to start.
The plan commission’s charge will be to review the request to determine if it meets the criteria for the use of land zoned as general business. The 42 acres is currently zoned single-family residential.
“It’s basically colors on a map,” Sewell said of the outcome of whatever the plan commission’s decision may be.
The request does not involve approval of any site plans, plats or proposed entrances to the facility.
Sewell said Parkview’s attorneys may show any plans that are ready to present, an act that is not uncommon at such meetings.
As for the entrances, those requests will have to go to the Indiana Department of Transportation since the property is bordered by only state and federal highways.
Sewell said the city council or other city office holders could be involved in those discussions, but the plan commission will not get involved until the plans affect something outside of the state’s right-of-way.
He also said that the future of the current hospital will not be included in Monday’s meeting, with the only focus being the rezoning request for the proposed new site.
