By Chris Meyers Staff writer Firefighters from three area fire departments spent Saturday afternoon battling a house fire north of Churubusco. At about 2:30 p.m., the Smith Township Fire Department received a report of a house fire just south of U.S. 33 off of Blue Lake Road. STFD Chief Roger Bennett said the first firefighter on scene reported light smoke visible from the bedroom. After helping a resident out of the house, the fire intensified and flames soon broke through the roof and front windows. “When the first full crew arrived, the fire flashed over to the front of the house,” Bennett said. Firefighters from Thorncreek and LaOtto fire departments also responded to the scene at 7230 E. Dogwood Ln. as did a Whitley County EMS crew, although no injuries were reported. The bedroom areas suffered heavy fire damage with the rest of the home also sustaining heat and smoke damage. “It’s a total loss,” Bennett said, adding that an electrical problem in the wall of the bedroom has been determined to be a possible cause.
