CCHS principal looking for zero tolerance for fights, weapons.
By Chris Meyers Staff writer When Columbia City High School Principal Gregg Goewert spoke to the school population at the end of the first trimester, he had two challenges for them — zero fights or weapon finds in the upcoming trimester. Those goals proved successful for the second trimester, which, according to Goewert, saw no physical fights or weapon confiscations. The usual weapon found is the occasional pocketknife, not guns or anything brought on the grounds with the intention of doing harm. “We moved two important categories to zero,” Goewert said at Tuesday’s board of school trustees meeting for Whitley County Consolidated Schools. He said he had challenged students in his “state of the union address” at the end of the first trimester to seek an adult’s intervention when a physical fight could be brewing. “I told them I don’t care if it’s a cafeteria worker, a custodian or anyone else. Find an adult,” Goewert said. The first trimester saw about 10 physical fights at CCHS.
